Nebraska’s cryptocurrency landscape has been evolving, and so have the risks associated with it. The Nebraska Legislature’s proposed Controllable Electronic Record Fraud Prevention Act (Legislative Bill 609), introduced by State Senator Eliot Bostar and endorsed by AARP Nebraska, passed final reading on March 6, and now awaits Governor Pillen’s signature to become law.

The latest scam making the rounds is asking you to pay a toll through a text. It might look real, but there are a few red flags to watch out for. The Federal Trade Commission recently released a consumer warning about these types of scams.

It’s National Consumer Protection Week—and while AARP is focused on protecting consumers year-round—this is a good time to highlight some key consumer protection tips.

At AARP, we constantly track the latest fraud scams to stay one step ahead of scammers. According to the FBI’s most recent Elder Fraud Report, elder fraud complaints to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center increased by 46%, and associated losses increased by 43% in 2024. New York had the fourth highest number of complaints filed by people over the age of 60, and is the fourth highest in monetary losses in this age group, according to the FBI data.
