VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR AARP FOUNDATION TAX-AIDE PROGRAM
AARP loved being a part of the fun during RAGBRAI XLV in Spencer on July 23! We had a great time welcoming more than 1,000 of the 10,000 riders who participated in this 45th anniversary celebration of the Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) as they rode in at the end of their 62-mile Day One ride from Algona to the Clay County Fairgrounds for Spencer’s “Kick Your Wheels Up” celebration.
It’s a universal truth the saying, “Life is what happens where you’re busy making plans.” Before becoming an Encore Entrepreneur, Sunit Rikhi, Founder of Reach for Infinity, LLC, had dedicated thirty-one years at Intel. The type to focus on the here and now, he never gave much thought about doing anything other than the task at hand, which was working on breakthrough technology while developing and managing the projects and teams he oversaw at Intel.
During the process of buying or making improvements to their forever homes, families don’t always consider the concept of “aging in place,” or having a home that is “user friendly” for family members as they age. Diana Zapata, a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS), has incorporated this concept into Zapata Design, the year-old interior design business she started as an Encore Entrepreneur.
On November 23-24, 1985, Egyptair Flight 648, bound for Cairo, was taken by three armed hijackers shortly after take-off from Athens. The terrorists were members of the Abu Nidal Organization (ANO), a splinter group of the PLO. There were 89 passengers and 6 crew members on board.
Two weeks ago the AARP Iowa team was in Spencer, Iowa for RAGBRAI. In a little over a week we will be stationed at the Iowa State Fair. In between these two huge events we have been working on finishing all the RAGBRAI events and working in preparation for the State Fair—all at the same time. In addition to those events, the interns are creating and presenting a final presentation to the AARP National Headquarters this Thursday and working to finish our list of businesses to evaluate for age-friendliness.
Our Ombudsman left us. (“Us” are the residents of the ALF I live in.) She resigned because, in addition to serving as our ALF’s Ombudsman, she had a “day job,” the job she held to earn a living. You see, working for us aged and disabled is a voluntary activity. It’s a choice a citizen makes to help the vulnerable in our communities.
AARP New Mexico is sponsoring a special play that looks at caregiving and aging: STILL IN THE GAME by Robert F. Benjamin, is an upbeat family drama about aging with grace, courage and humor, will be on stage in Santa Fe at Teatro Paraguas from Aug. 10-20, 2017.
Scammers may pose as relatives or friends, calling or sending messages to urge you to wire money immediately. They’ll say they need cash to help with an emergency – like getting out of jail, paying a hospital bill or needing to leave a foreign country. Their goal is to trick you into sending money before you realize it’s a scam.
