Military Veterans are proud of their service to their nation and rightly so. They’ve earned that right putting their lives on the line as family members stand strong during the Servicemember’s deployments and training exercises. The character of a Veteran is one who remains resolute to remain independent.

It is hard to believe that it has been 17 years since 9/11/01. A career Sailor, I was “thirty-something” on the day America was attacked, and now I'm a “fifty-something” military retiree supporting AARP Maryland on veterans issues. Reflecting on this really brought home to me how many of our veteran seniors have served and fought in the post-9/11 military!

AARP Arizona is helping to sponsor the Yavapai County StandDown, welcoming homeless veterans and those at risk of homelessness for a range of services and resources.

The following is a new AARP Maryland column written by AARP Volunteer Brian Smith, a Navy veteran who resides in National Harbor, Maryland.

Jacksonville, Fla. – Every year since 2001, AARP members, volunteers and staff have joined together in a National Day of Service to honor the victims, families and first responders of the 9/11 terror attacks. On Tuesday, Sept. 11, AARP volunteers and staff will step up again to serve homeless and struggling veterans in Jacksonville.
