This disruption affects individuals living on fixed incomes, many of whom rely on SNAP to afford groceries and maintain their health.

Annual Local Area on Aging Conference: Planning for the Future
The “Senior Academy” is a four-week course designed to provide Alexandria’s seniors with an opportunity to gain exposure to the City’s various government functions, learn about local organizations that provide services and programs for our senior community, and help seniors get involved! Classes will be held each Wednesday from 10am-12:30pm on September 4, 11, 18, and 25. The topics included are: Getting to know your City and How You Can Make a Difference/Community Resources/City Services for Seniors/Leisure, Cultural and Educational Opportunities. Space is limited to just 25 City residents 60+, the program is free, and SSA will be serving light refreshments each morning. Registration closes on August 23, and more information is available by calling Senior Services of Alexandria at 703-836-4414, ext. 113 or at www.seniorservicesalex.org

The Bangladesh Association of America, Inc. (BAAI) recently concluded their Annual End of Ramadan Food Drive for the ninth consecutive year. They collected over $7,000.00 and more than 150 pounds of canned and dry food. On Wednesday, June 26, 2019, they hosted a handing over ceremony were they donated their food drive collection to The Ecumenical Community Helping Others (ECHO).

What does an eighty-two-year-old lady, suffering the aftermath of a stroke, triple bypass heart surgery, and a husband who is seriously ill, who has glaucoma and cannot drive, do to survive?

Their stories were sad and poignant. And there was some humor as well. Caregivers had a chance to tell their stories at the AARP Listening Session on Tuesday, May 7, at the Montclair Community Library in Prince William County.
Cynthia from Richmond, Virginia selflessly gave up her career and livelihood to become a full-time caregiver to her husband, Jim, who has multiple sclerosis (MS), is a quadriplegic and only has mobility with his head. As her husband’s condition progressed, Jim became physically dependent and needed greater assistance to take care of his needs. Cynthia and Jim looked into hiring a caregiver, but with limited finances, the cost was too great. This was when Cynthia decided to put her career aside to become his primary caregiver.
