Virginia voters statewide will hear candidates’ positions on issues important to their families
Mother Nature was good to this AARP volunteer team on their first annual "Day of Service" at the Paul Stefan Foundation on Wednesday, May 30, 2018. It was a memorable day. Many thanks to Joan Albertella, Barb Ehlen, Judy Eiben, Gail Stoner, Bill Ruark and especially Mr. Reliable John Trach, who devoted two of his days to this project. The team did a masterful job of pulling weeds, planting flowers, tomato plants and cleaning up the area.
Join national expert Teepa Snow on Tuesday, June 19, 2018 for her workshop on Helping Throughout the Journey of Dementia; Understanding Progression and Providing the Best Care. This workshop will teach you how to understand dementing illnesses and respond to challenging situations.
AARP’s commitment to volunteer service began with our founder, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus. AARP continues to honor her legacy with the AARP Virginia Andrus Award for Community Service. This prestigious volunteer award recognizes individuals who are sharing their experience, talents, and skills to enrich their communities in ways that reflect AARP’s mission, vision, and commitment to volunteer service.
Professionals from nonprofit organizations, county government, and faith based organizations are invited to attend, along with family caregivers. This is the required seminar for those pursuing Certified Dementia Practitioner (CDP) certification, to qualify through the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners. To see if you qualify, please visit the NCCDP website at www.nccdp.org. You are also welcome to come for the education only, without seeking certification.
Arts Across Generations is a new AARP Blacksburg Chapter initiative. The program will take place June 1, 2018 in conjunction with Blacksburg’s Art Walk, the deadline for submissions is April 15. The program’s aim is to solicit, jury, display, and celebrate artworks created my multi-generational artists (e.g., a high school student and a grandparent; local artist and a neighbor enrolled in elementary school). Pairs do not have to be related, but at least one artist must be a resident of te New River Valley.
