Hawaii had the lowest voter turnout among all states in 2012 – with less than half (44.5 percent) of eligible voters casting ballots. Yet, older voters turn out to the polls at a much higher rate than any other age group, suggesting that Hawaii voters age 50-plus will play an important role in determining this year’s election results.
AARP Hawaii is bringing together aging specialists for a free Maui workshop aimed at preventing falls in the home. Titled Simple Steps to Fall Prevention, Better Health and a Home for Life the event will be held at Kaunoa Senior Center in Paia on Saturday, June 7 (9 a.m. - noon).
AARP Hawaii State President Gerry Silva and State Director Barbara Kim Stanton visited Capitol Hill on May 21 to urge Hawaii’s elected representatives to back bills, including the Older Americans Act, that can help Americans live their best lives. Visits to the offices of Senators Mazie Hirono and Brian Schatz and Members of the U.S. House of Representatives Colleen Hanabusa and Tulsi Gabbard took place to discuss a variety of issues crucial to older Americans.
Hawaii ranks first in pedestrian deaths among older residents age 65+ according to a national report released today. The report, Dangerous By Design 2014, ranks America’s major metropolitan areas and states according to a Pedestrian Danger Index (PDI) that indicates the likelihood a person walking the local streets will be hit be a driver of a vehicle and killed.
The state Legislature has created a task force to examine the critical role of family caregivers when their loved ones are admitted to the hospital and later discharged. As a member of the working group, AARP will help evaluate how Hawaii’s 247,000 family caregivers can be more effectively supported and involved in hospital discharge planning.
AARP Hawaii and other elder advocacy groups will pay tribute to family caregivers and the support they provide friends and loved ones at an event recognizing Hawaii’s ‘unsung heroes’ on Thursday, April 17 (9 – 11:30 a.m.) at the Japanese Cultural Center. The ‘We Care Celebration’ is free and open to the public and includes continental breakfast, door prizes, entertainment by Frank DeLima, and an update of recent legislative advocacy in support of family caregivers.
