I get really tired of the knee-jerk reactions of special interest groups against any new idea. But such is the state of our system of democracy today. What we need are solutions to problems that such organizations can accommodate — they need to give a little.

However, caring for an older family member can create a financial strain for many families who often spend thousands in out-of-pocket-dollars while being caregivers. Thus, with the expected increase in our aging population, it is time to recognize the value of family caregivers and provide a little help.
When older adults need support from loved ones to get through their recovery period at home after checking out of a hospital, who assumes the burden of “caregiving”? The answer is usually women, who are already juggling with the demands of being competent at work, be responsible as wives, mothers and daughters. On Saturday July 19 th, over 100 caregivers and those that care for THEM wore stickers in either English or Spanish (or both!) proudly claiming “I LOVE CAREGIVERS!” These attendees gathered at the Raritan Bay YMCA in Perth Amboy, New Jersey to attend the first event of AARP New Jersey’s Caring for Caregivers series. The purpose of these events is to empower caregivers through a network of organizations and by sharing their stories with other caregivers facing similar challenges.
