The right to vote, along with full and fair representation, is the most basic of all political rights. AARP North Carolina is against the effort for a state constitutional amendment (HB1092) that would, in practical terms, reduce voter participation by inhibiting basic American voting rights. We urge legislators and voters to oppose any constitutional amendment for new identification requirements.
Despite continued suburban sprawl, communities across the nation are taking steps to become better places to live and age in, according to data analyzed from the newly updated AARP Livability Index. More communities are enacting policies to improve livability with notable increases in housing trust funds that set aside revenue for a variety of affordable housing strategies—now in over 200 counties. Along with overall livability trends, AARP identifies the top ten large, mid-size and small cities.

Movie enthusiasts of all ages are descending on Des Moines this week for the Interrobang Film Festival (IFF) presented by AARP Movies for Grownups. More than 55 films from 30 countries will be screened over the three days of the Des Moines Arts Festival® June 22-24.

AARP members across Virginia join together in local communities through independently incorporated chapters. These chapters offer informational programs, advocacy and service opportunities. You can join an AARP Chapter to meet new people, give back, and have fun. Chapter activities can include meals, cultural outings and trips, and for many, community service is a major priority. Following the Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) new rule proposal intended to help consumers get investment advice in their best interest, AARP today previewed upcoming testimony for a SEC Investor Advisory Committee (IAC) meeting later this week in Atlanta, Ga.
Elder Abuse can happen anywhere, anytime. It’s estimated that older adults lose about $3 billion annually due to financial exploitation and abuse. The effects go beyond the checkbook; it can cause emotional distress, deterioration of physical health, and loss of independence. Only about 1 out of 14 cases are actually reported to authorities. If you suspect someone is being abused, please report it to local law enforcement or the Alabama Department of Senior Services (1-800-243-5463).
Mother Nature was good to this AARP volunteer team on their first annual "Day of Service" at the Paul Stefan Foundation on Wednesday, May 30, 2018. It was a memorable day. Many thanks to Joan Albertella, Barb Ehlen, Judy Eiben, Gail Stoner, Bill Ruark and especially Mr. Reliable John Trach, who devoted two of his days to this project. The team did a masterful job of pulling weeds, planting flowers, tomato plants and cleaning up the area.
