Congratulations to Andrea "Ande" Bozarth, AARP Kansas Associate State Director for Community Outreach, who is the first recipient of the Sherrie Gordon Award for Excellence in Multicultural Leadership. Ande was nominated for the national award by AARP Kansas Director Maren Turner for her work with the American Indian/Native American Community in Kansas.

Topeka area-residents who want to learn more about starting a business, especially those who are 50 and older, are invited to attend a free workshop in Topeka on July 29th at the Topeka and Shawnee County Library. Encore entrepreneurs over the age of 50 are one of the fastest growing groups of business owners. If you are an individual who is looking to start a new adventure, entrepreneurship can offer an opportunity for you to use your knowledge, passion, life and professional experience toward creating a small business.

For a second consecutive year, AARP DC was a sponsor for the 2016 Citi Open®. The nine-day event (July 16-24) took place at the Rock Creek Park Tennis Center. The free tennis clinic conducted by acclaimed tennis coach Wayne Bryan, was offered by the DC State Office. Bryan is the father of the Bryan brothers, the number two Men's Doubles champs.

It’s hard to believe, but Election Day is just right around the corner — and the candidates are hunting for your vote. But as they roll out the same speeches and soundbites about important issues like the future of Social Security, it seems like many have forgotten what’s really at stake here: Your money, your future, and the futures of your children and grandchildren.

Over 50% of those 65+ in the US rely on Social Security for most of their family income. Though America has evolved over the last 80 years, Social Security has not. With no change to current policy and spending, Social Security can only continue to pay out full benefits until 2034.

Earlier this year AARP South Carolina launched a campaign to move our advocacy efforts into a more local arena. AARP SC volunteers are crucial to our advocacy work and can often best accomplish our goals by working in their local communities. To kick off this effort, we have worked in Anderson and Beaufort counties with local legislators.
