Older drivers tend to be safe drivers. They are more likely to wear seat belts and less likely to drive drunk. But is your car safe for you?

Volunteering with AARP can be fun and rewarding, but it’s even more fulfilling when volunteers come together and make an impact as a team. Meet our featured volunteers and college sweethearts, Ronald and Elouise McLaughlin.

Upcoming Courses

AARP is now accepting applications for the 2018 Community Challenge grant program to fund “quick-action” projects that spark change in local communities. The grant program, which is now in its second year, is part of AARP’s nationwide Livable Communities initiative, which aims to make communities great places to live for everyone.

AARP Smart Driver™ – the driving refresher course from AARP Driver Safety – will be offered at the Falls Church Community Center at 223 Little Falls Street, Falls Church, Va., from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Thursday and Friday, April 19-20, 2018. Participants must attend both days to receive a certificate of completion. The class will be taught by certified volunteer instructor Pamela Houghtaling.

Are you eager to help your community? Do you want to meet new people? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you should consider volunteering with AARP Mississippi. Being a volunteer is a fulfilling experience that allows you to give back to your community in a meaningful way. All that is required is a genuine interest in helping the community by donating your time and skills, said Associate State Director for Community Outreach Ivory Craig.

This Black History Month, we invite you to join us in the celebration from Feb. 1 through Feb. 28. You can get a discount on AARP membership (25 percent off for new or renewing members) and on the online AARP Driver Safety course. You may even be able to get together with friends and neighbors for a free movie screening of The Butler and The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks Story in Central Virginia.

The AARP Smart Driver course is geared towards drivers 50+ ( though any driver may attend) and covers practical defensive driving techniques, the effects of the normal changes to vision and hearing caused by aging and the effects of medications and alcohol. The course reviews the latest ‘rules of the road’ and operating vehicles safely in today’s environment and with today’s technology. It is not a behind-the-wheel course but a classroom seminar with a good deal of interaction between the participants. There is no pass-fail.
