Gwendolyn Spencer Prater, Ph.D. of Madison has been appointed as the new State President of AARP Mississippi. State President is AARP’s highest volunteer position in Mississippi, representing 285,000 AARP members in the state. In partnership with the State Director, volunteers and staff, the State President helps the organization achieve its vision, mission and strategic priorities.

In recognition of Black History Month, AARP Driver Safety is offering a 25 percent discount on the award-winning AARP Smart Driver online course throughout the entire month of February.

To help the 10,000 Americans turning 65 every day and all senior drivers find a better “fit” with their cars for comfort and safety, mobility experts are hosting a safety program designed to help older drivers and their families. CarFit is national program developed by AAA, AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association and is designed to give a quick, yet comprehensive check on how well an older driver and their vehicle work together.

A new state law supported by AARP Oregon cracks down on distracted driving. Drivers cannot touch their phones behind the wheel. Hands-free phone usage is still allowed.

Pat Sherwood of Glenrock was honored last Tuesday in Casper for her work with AARP’s Smart Driver Course, during the organization’s Volunteer Recognition Dinner.

AARP is currently recruiting a volunteer Driver Safety State Coordinator for Nebraska. The Driver Safety State Coordinator recruits, manages, coaches, motivates and provides direction to other Driver Safety volunteers at the local level to facilitate state-wide growth.
