Now in its fourth year of helping Massachusetts residents 50+ realize their entrepreneurial dreams, Encore Entrepreneur, the AARP outreach program with the Small Business Administration (SBA), is better than ever.

Surveys indicate that Americans aren’t saving enough for retirement, and the risk of coming up financially short is especially real for Hawaii’s women – who tend to live longer, earn less, and spend more time out the workforce caring for family than men.

AARP released results of a survey recently to celebrate the 80 th Anniversary of Social Security on August 14, 2015. Americans of all ages continue to have strong feelings of support for Social Security, and the survey found several key themes. According to the national survey of adults, Social Security remains a core part of retirement security, and remains popular across generations and political ideologies. Americans want to live independently, but face challenges around saving for retirement that underscore the importance of Social Security for future generations of beneficiaries.

Today marks a significant milestone in what Americans agree is one of the most important - if not the most important - government program - Social Security turns 80!

It was 80 years ago today that President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Social Security into law--on Aug. 14, 1935. In Arkansas, 666,172 people--among 59 million people nationwide--Social Security benefits.

Statistics tell a powerful story. Consider that 36 percent of Texas residents age 65 or older depend on Social Security as their only source of income. Or that more than four of 10 in this age group would live in poverty were it not for Social Security.

Mike Sherlock spent 30 years in the commercial fishing industry, first running boats in the Bering Sea and later as a shipyard owner. But at the age of 54, he decided he wanted a different kind of life.
