Volunteering

Meet our volunteers and find opportunities to get involved with our outreach and community service programs.
“Stand Down at the Beach” is this Friday, September 19 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Myrtle Beach at the U.S. Army Reserve. The event aims to help homeless Veterans and Veterans receive services and resources such as food, shelter, clothing, health screenings, VA and Social Security benefits counseling and referrals for other services, such as housing, employment and substance abuse treatment.
Two of AARP New Mexico’s volunteer leaders, Jerry Gunderson, of Las Cruces, and Mabel Blacksheep, of Window Rock, AZ, have been accepted into the AARP Volunteer Leadership Institute. The Institute is an intensive leadership program that prepares volunteers for new responsibilities and opportunities that support AARP’s mission.
Recently for AARP DC there was a volunteer reversal. Youth volunteers from Mentor Up taught older adults the basics on how to use and navigate the Internet using desktop computers, laptops, smartphones, and tablets. Older District residents also learned how to use Microsoft Office applications, establish an email account, use search engines, take pictures using a smartphone and send email with attachments. A few even dabbled with social media and how to find their favorite radio or TV station online.
Rev. Joseph K. Williams Named AARP DC President
During the week of September 7th, AARP volunteers, staff, and members contributed thousands of pounds of food to local food pantries.

In just one week, more than 40 federal, state, and local resource organizations and service providers will come together for "Stand Down at the Beach." AARP South Carolina, Veteran’s Welcome Home Center, Palmetto Goodwill and Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson are the primary sponsors of the event. Stand Down at the Beach will be held on Friday, September 19, 2014 from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the U.S. Army Reserve, 3392 Phillis Boulevard.
In the wake of overwhelming tragedy, 9/11 generated one of the most spontaneous and durable outpourings ever of dedication to helping others. AARP designates Sept. 11 of each year as a National Day of Service in which AARP staff, members and volunteers are invited to give back to their local communities.
