Living a vigorous life in service to others was how Sue Whitman was remembered during a memorial service in her honor on June 14, 2014 at Iona House. Sue died on March 27 th at the age of 103. She was buried next to her husband at Arlington National Cemetery As a member of AARP DC’s Advocacy Team, Sue was a champion for long-term care for the elderly in Washington, DC. In addition to serving as an AARP volunteer, Sue donated her advocacy “muscle” to a number of the District’s groups working with older residents including: serving as founding President of the Volunteer Clearinghouse, working for ten years as an Iona House volunteer, and being a Commissioner on the DC Commission on Aging.
This summer, I can add “running coach” to my resume. I love to run, and since attending graduate school, running has served a new purpose for me. It is my meditation, my break from studying, and the fastest way to get a good workout into my busy schedule. Training for races has been a large stabilizing function of my life and helped lay out attainable goals to work toward. Plus, it’s fun to do in groups!

Jackson, MS – Mississippi ranks 49th overall when it comes to meeting the long-term care needs of older residents, and AARP warns much more must be done, at an accelerated pace, to improve across-the-board – but especially when it comes to five key dimensions. This, according to a new, comprehensive state-by-state Scorecard from AARP with support of the nation’s leading organizations behind quality long-term care, The Commonwealth Fund and SCAN Foundation.
