Over 1.7 million New Jersey residents are caring for an aging parent or loved one, helping them to live independently in their own homes. These family caregivers have a huge responsibility, and The Caregiver Advise, Record, Enable (CARE) Act takes some common sense steps that will make a world of difference to them. That’s why AARP supported the adoption of this law to better support family caregivers as they safely help New Jersey seniors and loved ones stay at home.

It’s that time of year again, tax season. For many people filing tax returns is a very stressful and complicated process. It can also be an expensive one for those seeking professional assistance. If you are a New Jersey resident and fall into one of these categories, fret no longer. AARP New Jersey offers a Tax Aide program that will assist you with filing your taxes free of charge.

Through the Fraud Watch Network, AARP is arming New Jerseyan’s with the tools they need to spot and avoid fraud and scams so they can protect themselves and their families!

Before Erlinda Hair began volunteering at the AARP New Jersey state office two years ago, she worked as an advertising salesperson for the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Daily News. As a longtime member of AARP, Erlinda decided to join her local chapter after she made the move to New Jersey, eventually contacting the state office to learn about other volunteer opportunities.

One of AARP New Jersey’s newest volunteers, Jacqueline Robinson worked in the Pharmaceutical industry for the majority of her career. When she was downsized after working at her last company for 27 years, Jackie decided to step out on a limb – she opted to take the retirement package offered to her and start JRR Consulting, Inc., and the division “Retire and Reinvent” ( www.retireandreinvent.com). Because Jackie is passionate about helping people become the person they were meant to be, she became a Certified Seminar Leader. “I developed ‘Passion & Purpose: A Guide to Rewriting Life After Retirement,” said Jackie. “The goal of the seminar is to help professional Baby Boomer women define their passions and use them as a guide to their purpose.”

Long standing AARP member and Princeton native Anthony Cifelli recalls what it was like when his mother, Angeline Cifelli, would put up young women who were visiting Princeton University for football weekends before the school was coeducational. “I remember, because we’d get kicked out of our bedrooms,” Anthony recalled.

On Friday, November 6, 2015 and Saturday November 14, 2015, AARP New Jersey held “Financial Freedom” workshops for New Jerseyans looking to increase their savings and plan for retirement.

In conjunction with November’s National Family Caregivers Month, AARP New Jersey hosted its first Movies for Grownups screening on Friday, November 13, 2015 at the historic and beautiful Newark Museum. Attendees viewed The Theory of Everything, a tale of hardship, love, and adversity in life. AARP members and volunteers enjoyed free refreshments and the full theater erupted with clapping upon the film’s conclusion.
