ASHEVILLE -- Accessory Dwelling Units — commonly known as backyard bungalows, garage apartments and so-called granny flats — are small homes that exist on the same property lot as a single-family residence. Not only are these housing options important for family caregivers who want their loved ones to live nearby, their popularity is growing in crowded urban areas where land is scarce and expensive.

These organizations will provide immediate improvements to their communities and jumpstart long-term change.

From ride sharing to telehealth, funding focuses on community needs during COVID.

Raised beds and a handwashing station in a community garden are just one of the projects funded by AARP Community Challenge grant winners in Colorado this year. The projects must be completed by year’s end.

Four organizations have received AARP 2020 Community Challenge grants to fund projects that can be quickly executed to improve the quality of life for people of all ages. 

AARP Community Challenge grants are funding multiple projects in Massachusetts, including a new public green space, raised beds with plants for neighbors and an inter-generational dialogue held via Zoom.

AARP has awarded five Community Challenge grants to help localities across Texas improve transportation and public spaces.
