Medical student volunteers with AARP to help older adults improve their health
In the United States, the vast majority of long-term care for older people is provided by family members, such as and spouses, children and other relatives. But LGBTQ elders are only half as likely as their heterosexual counterparts to have close family to lean on for help.
GREENSBORO, NC -- Do you ask yourself every day, "What’s for dinner?" If you are like most people, you want to start off the new year by eating better. Are you sick of your own cooking? If so, this is a great virtual opportunity for you to learn to prepare new tasty and nutritious meals.
Making and sending valentines has been an American tradition since the end of the 18th Century. Here in North Carolina, AARP is offering two events in February to make it easy for you to extend this tradition of love to older Americans, especially the several million who are isolated or living alone.
RALEIGH— AARP has launched the AARP Veterans and Military Spouses Job Center, a new digital platform bringing together valuable information and resources to help North Carolina’s nearly 800,000 veterans and military spouses compete in today’s job market. The job center includes a new Veterans Career Advantage Course to build on career planning and skills development to help navigate the job market. According to an AARP survey, more than half (56%) of employers say the experience and the use of skills in previous positions are 'very important' when evaluating applicants' skills.

DURHAM, NC – AARP is working with home design expert Richard Duncan of the RL Mace Universal Home Design Institute, on multiple strategies such as universal design and missing middle housing in order for people to age in place and also provide various housing options/alternatives such as ADUs, tiny homes, and manufactured housing. The concept of “Universal Home Design” is just one being used to tackle what has become a housing crisis for older North Carolinians.
Volunteer opportunities in Charlotte
Americans overwhelmingly want to age at home, and AARP North Carolina is working to make that option more widely available.
