The newest federal consumer protection agency is the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), created in 2011 in response to the financial crisis of 2007-2008. T he CFPB has jurisdiction over banks, credit unions, securities firms, payday lenders, mortgage-service companies, foreclosure relief services, and debt collectors, among other financial institutions. Thus far it has focused on mortgages, credit cards, and student loans. It is located inside the Federal Reserve System, with an interim affiliation with the U. S. Treasury Department.

AARP Rhode Island Marks Social Security’s 78th Anniversary

John Meredith of Colorado Springs was recently named Colorado AARP Foundation Tax-Aide State Coordinator. He will oversee the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide sites and more than 300 volunteers, who prepare tax returns free of charge each year for low- to moderate-income families.

More North Dakotans 65 and older and homeowners of any age with a disability are now eligible for the Homestead Property Tax Credit because of a major expansion approved by the 2013 North Dakota Legislature.
