Volunteering

Meet our volunteers and find opportunities to get involved with our outreach and community service programs.
Over the past 12 years nearly 800 tons of food has been collected through Feed Colorado and donated to Volunteers of America’s City Harvest Food Bank. The food donated to City Harvest provides the basic - and the most plentiful - supply of shelf-stable foods received from any source. In 2011 over 65,000 households donated food to the drive.
STATEWIDE – Are you still looking for tax help? Book an appointment with an AARP Foundation Tax-Aide counselor. Now through April 16, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide – the nation’s largest, volunteer-run, free tax preparation program – is currently helping taxpayers with basic federal and state income tax returns.
With one month left to go, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers are busier than ever - helping thousands of Bay State residents with their tax returns and questions. As part of our ongoing spotlight series, we headed north to the Lowell Senior Center to visit with site coordinator Harry Gong and his team of volunteers. Though many were a bit 'camera-shy', we talked to several clients, who expressed their appreciation for all AARP Foundation Tax-Aide does to help them year in and year out.
In our final story to share from last week’s Harvest for the Hungry food drive, AARP Foundation's Vice President for Housing Vivian Visallo volunteered for the HfH food drive with help from her two parents (who are also AARP members!) at her local Safeway in Washington, DC. The experience was an incredibly positive one. Here is their family’s story:
AARP volunteers could be found in dozens of Safeway stores last week in the DC, Maryland and Virginia region—all in their signature red shirts. Read on for two more stories from volunteers who spent their time helping to raise more than 45,000 pounds of week in just one week:
During February and March, in honor of Black History Month, AARP is celebrating the stories of six Californians defining what it means to take hold of all of life’s possibilities at any age.
Last week’s Harvest for the Hungry food drive saw volunteers helping to raise more than 45,000 pounds of donated, pre-filled bags of groceries in just one week. An astounding amount! Here is another story from an AARP Maryland volunteer who helped staffed her local Safeway during that time:
“It’s not a bag of food. It’s a bag of hope.”
Did you know that each year, Medicare loses billions of dollars as a result of fraud, waste and abuse? If you’re like most Medicare beneficiaries, you’ve probably had questions about your Medicare statements, called Summary Notices, and have often wondered what all of those numbers and codes mean. Sometimes it’s difficult to tell whether you are being billed correctly for the services you’ve received. That’s why AARP has developed new tools to help you better understand your Medicare statements and to help save the program money by identifying and reporting fraud and abuse.
PROVIDENCE – AARP Rhode Island State Director Kathleen Connell today announced the appointment of Alan B. Neville as State President.
