Steve Polston – who has spent years helping the homeless in Lexington – is the 2015 winner of the AARP Kentucky Andrus Award for Community Service. And the New Life Day Center, a non-profit facility founded by Polston, is a big winner too – earning a $2,000 check from AARP Kentucky.

AARP Hawaii and U.S. Senator Brian Schatz joined hundreds of Hawaii seniors in celebrating the 80th anniversary of Social Security at the Ala Moana Hotel’s Hibiscus Ballroom on Saturday, August 15. The event took place at the 9th annual Aging in Place Conference, sponsored by KHON2’s Elderhood Project and Generations magazine, and featured singing, birthday cake, and brief remarks by Sen. Schatz.

New research on the number of family caregivers in the islands and the value of the unpaid care they provide loved ones has given greater urgency to the need to support caregivers in Hawaii.

This week on Real Life, you’ll learn about Mentor Up – a program where young people help older adults stay connected and adjust to the many challenges they face in today’s changing world.

For Phil Jordan of Whidbey Island, he had to leave the theater behind but the theater never left his blood. Today, he's directing a major production at the Whidbey Island Center For The Arts.

AARP Tennessee’s Celebration of Service is Sept. 11

Each year, AARP volunteers and staff give back in a slightly different way. On Sept. 11, a nationwide day of service, we step out of our community events and away from our desks and choose a different place to serve. This year is no different. Across the state, we're going to do something a little out of the ordinary--from walking dogs at animal shelters to serving meals to homebound seniors. Would you like to join us?
