AARP New York is urging legislators to boost the 2017-18 state budget for non-Medicaid services that help older New Yorkers age safely at home. The goal is to provide transportation, home-delivered meals, adult day care and other services for people who are eligible for, but are not yet receiving, home- and community-based services.
Melissa Foster of Kenmore, N.Y., was presented with AARP’s most prestigious volunteer award for community service on Thursday, November 10. Foster, who founded and leads the Kenmore Village Improvement Society, has been selected by AARP New York, the nonprofit organization for people 50 and older, to receive its 2016 Andrus Award for Community Service.

AARP is celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month by cosponsoring the annual People en Español festival at the Jacob Javits Center in New York, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 15-16.
In November of this year, people 50 and older will cast their votes throughout the boroughs as they elect leaders in their communities. November also marks my 11th anniversary with AARP. My journey with AARP started in Boston, led me to Albany, and finally resulted in my arrival here in New York City – a place where the current mayor and I both root for the same baseball team, even though they’re in last place.
We were thrilled to host our first candidate forum of 2015 in Queens, marking AARP’s first-ever dive into issues advocacy on the local level in New York City. More than 200 New Yorkers engaged in the event and had many questions for the candidates.
