Many people want a secure retirement, but not everyone has the right tools to achieve it. AARP North Carolina is asking state lawmakers to set up a retirement savings plan for people who don’t have access to a 401(k) or similar plan at work.

Veterans Day is around the corner and in honor of Vetera ns, you’ll learn more about Flags Across the Nation, an organization that is creating opportunities for children and adults to get involved in creating patriotic art, letter writing, making blankets and demonstrating respect for the American flag while giving support to our troops, wounded warriors, recovering soldiers and veterans with art, letters, blankets, flags and art/photo contests and exhibits.

“If you have a pension, you’re one of the lucky ones,” said a Duke economist acknowledging that over the past few decades, most employers have shifted away from maintaining a pension fund for their workers and former employees. Increasingly, it’s up to people to save on their own, usually through a 401K from their employer or from opening an Individual Retirement Account. Yet, many workers are finding themselves near retirement, without the retirement income or savings they need to stay out of poverty and off public assistance programs.

AARP North Carolina released the third and final part of the Gubernatorial Voters Guide with Governor Pat McCrory and Attorney General Roy Cooper. The two present their proposals to make communities across the state “age-friendly.”

AARP is hosting a Celebration of Freedom on Veterans Day weekend to honor North Carolinians who served in the armed forces. The free event will be Saturday, Nov. 12, from noon to 8 p.m., at the Battleship North Carolina Park in Wilmington.

RALEIGH -- A new AARP survey of North Carolina registered voters ages 45 plus, finds an information gap when it comes to voters’ knowledge of the gubernatorial candidates’ policy proposals and the voting issues that age cohort care most about. The same survey found that the vast majority of older voters, 97 percent, plan to participate in Election 2016, and will be a deciding factor in both the federal and state races.
