NRTA : AARP’s Educator Community has awarded the 2013 With Our Youth! Dedication Award to Brenda Leider of Mountlake Terrace, WA. Brenda is recognized for her outstanding work with the Marysville School District English Language Learner Penpal Program.
Barbara Spreitzer-Berent of Northville has been called “volunteer extraordinaire.” Now she will be called the 2013 winner of the Andrus Award for Community Service, AARP’s most prestigious and visible volunteer award.
Rob Fowler, CEO and President of the Small Business Association of Michigan, has been named the winner of the 2013 Stephen J. Gools Award for Social Change sponsored by AARP Michigan.
More than 100 AARP volunteers from across the state gathered in Fargo for this year’s volunteer conference entitled, “Inspired to Care, Empowered to Act.”
AARP is focused on making Charlotte and the region more livable for people of all ages. Walkable Charlotte Week, our Livable Communities Listening Sessions, and the upcoming Making a More Livable Mecklenburg livable communities summit are helping to engage people 50+ on the effort to meet the challenges of the coming demographic changes. This week AARP North Carolina's local team in Charlotte conducted Walkable Charlotte Week, which aimed to raise awareness about the issue of walkability and why that is an essential component of creating a livable community.
Throughout November, AARP will be continuing its Charlotte programs on the Affordable Care Act. At these November sessions, we will be joined by counselors to help answer detailed questions about how the ACA affects you and your family, including the new "Marketplace". Space is limited and pre-registration is required (see links below).
AARP Virginia is fighting for you in Washington, but we could use your help. If you have an interest in federal legislative issues -- such as protecting Medicare or Social Security -- consider signing up as an AARP Virginia Congressional District Volunteer.
AARP Virginia conducted a statewide food drive in September along with partnering organizations the Federation of Virginia Food Banks, AmeriCorps, TRIAD and the Urban League of Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads. The total of canned soup, peanut butter, tuna fish, cereal, and monetary donations calculates to 120,719 total pounds of food served to Virginia families struggling with hunger.
Because combining the demands of caregiving with life’s other challenges can be overwhelming and lonely, the AARP Foundation launched Connecting Caregivers to Community, a pilot program in four cities nationwide, including Washington.
AARP West Virginia is recruiting volunteers to help low- to moderate-income taxpayers, especially those age 60-plus, prepare and file their 2013 tax returns.
