Nearly nine million Americans 50+ are at risk for hunger every day – a 79 percent increase in just 10 years. The Drive to End Hunger is AARP Foundation’s multipronged approach on this problem. Established in 2011, the program is focused on combating hunger among people 50 and older through raising awareness, building philanthropic support and developing long-term, sustainable solutions.

James “Jim” Billey of Ellendale is the recipient of the 2013 AARP Andrus Award for Community Service.
“Did you tell him my news?” I asked referring to my offer and acceptance to work as an AmeriCorps VISTA with AARP Foundation in New York City addressing older adult hunger and food insecurity. “Yes,” my dad responded, “Sam protested that you were a country girl and farmer at heart and didn’t belong in a big city.”
AARP Connecticut volunteers, Cynthia Delfavero and Byron Peterson were recent guests on the popular public access television program, CT Valley Views. Cindi and Byron talked with host Susan Regan about why they volunteer with AARP and the organization's education, advocacy and community service work. During the interview they highlight the work they and other volunteers are doing to help inform members and the public about the new health care law, also known as the Affordable Care Act or Obamacare. AARP@TheStateHouse aims to organize volunteers who will make their presence known at the State House every Tuesday of the legislative session and on days of key votes.
AARP Utah is awarding its highest volunteer honor to Nikki Boyer, leader of the Utah Pride Center, which serves the Salt Lake City lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. As president of its board and a longtime mentor and volunteer with other organizations, Boyer was selected for the AARP Utah Andrus Award for Community Service, which commemorates AARP founder Ethel Percy Andrus.
AARP Connecticut is recruiting volunteers to help other state residents prepare and file their returns in the tax season ahead. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide offers free face-to-face help for low- to moderate-income taxpayers, especially those age 60-plus.
AARP Illinois is recruiting volunteers to get involved in legislative advocacy and to strengthen the relevance of AARP in communities throughout the state.
