AARP Nevada State Director Carla Sloan has announced the appointment of Mary Liveratti as state president. A former deputy director of the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services and 24-year veteran of the Nevada Division for Aging and Disability Services, Liveratti brings a wealth of experience working with programs and services for older Nevadans, as well as a lifelong commitment to volunteerism.
They're in the community every day - volunteering, making a difference, lending their time and talent to help others in need. They are often unsung heroes, working and giving without recognition or thanks - just because it's the right thing to do. AARP Nevada seeks to recognize these community leaders through the Andrus Award for Community Service. Each year, the Andrus Award recognizes volunteers who have made their communities better in ways that support AARP's mission and vision, and that inspire others to volunteer.
This week, we met with volunteers and chapter leaders from all over the state to talk about what we're working on this year, and how we can get more folks involved in the community! We heard from longtime Driver Safety Program (and former Andrus Award winner!) Bertha Lawrence from Pittsfield, who talked about the satisfaction she derives from helping others stay safe on the roads. Jane Ahern-DeFiillippi, our new Executive Council Member from Melrose, talked about how she stays on top of advocacy news and events by visiting our blog and Facebook pages daily. Lois Wells, pictured here with longtime chapter specialist Mary Matook of Brockton, shared how she started her Boston chapter 28 years ago, and Charlie Walsh of Salem gave some tips on how he helps to keep his group vibrant and active (hint: lots of bad jokes, and occasional cheerful yelling. Can you tell Charlie was a school principal?).
The AARP Foundation's Housing Solutions Center and Consumer Fraud Prevention projects are picking up speed for the summer season. Colorado volunteers are urgently needed - those with bilingual Spanish language skills in particular.

Janet volunteers for the AARP Foundation’s Tax-Aide program two days a week, where she helps low-income taxpayers file their taxes at the Ballard and Shoreline libraries. Toby works in the Foundation’s Fraud Fighter Call Center in north Seattle, which helps battle financial scams.

Newly-appointed AARP California State President George Davis of Los Angeles made some time for our inaugural "Three Questions" series, sharing how he got involved with our organization and his vision for the future of our work.

AARP Oregon is excited to be a sponsor of this year’s Portland Sunday Parkways. As part of our sponsorship, we are looking to recruit and engage AARP members and non-members alike as volunteers to help us at each of the five Parkways events. Volunteers are needed for a variety of roles, including:
